Magnus Norman reveals he and Stan Wawrinka got emotional before 2016 US Open final

Coach Magnus Norman decided to take a moment just before the US Open and tell his pupil Stan Wawrinka how proud of him he was -- and the Swiss couldn't hold his emotions.

Wawrinka, ranked at No. 17, made his maiden US Open final in 2016 and he was eager to make the most out of it and lift his third Grand Slam title at Flushing Meadows.

Former world No. 3 Wawrinka ended up doing so after putting up a marvelous performance to stun world No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the final.

Leading up to the US Open that year, Wawrinka made the Toronto Masters semifinal before he lost to Grigor Dimitrov in the Cincinnati Masters second round.

"Before the (US Open) final, we had a good American tour on hard. I was very proud of what Stan did and I started telling him that," Norman told Tennis With An Accent, as revealed on We Love Tennis France. "Between the nerves and emotion -- before the match -- he started to cry. And it made me cry too. We vented our emotions and I will never forget that moment."

A year earlier, Wawrinka put up his probably best-ever clay performance in the 2015 French Open final to beat 17-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic.

"It was a moment that meant a lot for me. Guga (Kuerten) was there and he gave him (Wawrinka) the trophy, at the very place where he had beaten me in 2000. It was a very exciting moment."
