Nicolas Kiefer Criticizes the Way Politicians Are Dealing with Sports Right Now
Former World No. 4 Nicolas Kiefer has criticized the way politicians are dealing with sports during the current COVID-19 pandemic.
The 42 year old Kiefer says politicians are more interested in resuming soccer as compared to other sports like tennis which are safer from a social distancing perspective due to the bigger money involved in soccer.
In an interview with the German media, Kiefer says, "There can only be politicians at work who have never played sports in their lives. This has nothing to do with practical handling."
"Tennis in particular would be almost risk-free to play with a few measures."
The German continues that he does not believe that the ATP & WTA Tours will resume this year due to the global health crisis, saying it is very unlikely that it would happen.
“This is a global tour. To do this, travel restrictions should be lifted globally. The fans also come from all over the world. It cannot work. Tragic, but unthinkable for me."
Kiefer is also helping in his own way during the current crisis - his clothing company is producing masks that could be used by the general public.
He also reached the semifinals of the 2006 Australian Open and won a silver medal in men's doubles with Rainer Schuttler at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens.
The 42 year old Kiefer has won 6 ATP tour singles titles and 3 ATP tour doubles titles in his career.
