Agassi: 'I don’t think I would have had a chance against Roger Federer'

Former World number 1 Andre Agassi has no doubts in defining Roger Federer as the greatest player of all time. The former American champion, who faced King Roger in the 2005 US Open final, had expressed his preference for Rafael Nadal in the past, but now seems to have changed his mind.

“Federer, without doubt,” he told Bild, when asked who the GOAT is. “Nobody stood out from their opponents on the court as much as he did. “I don’t think [I would have had a chance against him at my best]. I played against him in the final of the 2005 US Open. I won a set – more was not possible" - he added.

“I’d put Nadal No. 1, Federer No. 2,” Agassi told the Straits Times in 2014, adding: “it’s just remarkable to me what he has done, and he has done it all during Federer’s prime. Nadal had to deal with Federer, [Novak] Djokovic, and [Andy] Murray in the golden age of tennis.”

Federer's all-court game and versatile style of play involve exceptional footwork and shot-making. Effective both as a baseliner and a volleyer, his apparent effortlessness and efficient movement on the court have made Federer highly popular among tennis fans. He has received the tour Sportsmanship Award 13 times and been named the ATP Player of the Year and ITF World Champion five times.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion has won the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year award a record five times, including four consecutive awards from 2005 to 2008. He is also the only person to have won the BBC Overseas Sports Personality of the Year award four times.
