Former Top 40 player Announces Retirement from Tennis

Former World No. 32 Romina Oprandi has announced her retirement from professional tennis, as per reports in the Swiss media.

Oprandi has battled through several injuries in her career - the most recent one being a wrist surgery in October.

She has dual Swiss-Italian citizenship and represented Italy from her professional debut in 2005 until January 2012, when she joined the Swiss tennis federation. She has won 26 singles titles and 11 doubles titles on the ITF Women's Circuit, and also one doubles title on the WTA Tour. She achieved her career-high singles ranking of world No. 32 in June 2013, winning over $1.5 million in career prize money.

Oprandi has now founded a sports related company with a partner which she has recently registered. As part of the company, Oprandi has taken over the management of the Thalmatt sports center in Herrenschwanden near Bern - although the same is currently closed due to the global pandemic.

Oprandi was also part of the Italian Fed Cup team that won the title in 2006 although she did not play in the final. 

In 2011 she defeated the world number 2 Kim Clijsters in 's-Hertogenbosch. Among the highlights of her career at the majors were reaching the third round at the Australian Open 2012.

In April 2014, Oprandi reached her first WTA final beating top seed Daniela Hantuchová in the semifinals at the Marrakech Grand Prix. She lost to María Teresa Torró Flor in the final. The same day, she won her first WTA doubles title at the same tournament, partnering with Garbine Muguruza to defeat Katarzyna Piter and Maryna Zanevska in the final.
