Nick Kyrgios insists the US Open shouldn’t take place in current conditions

Nick Kyrgios expressed once again his disapproval regarding United States Tennis Association’s decision to hold the US Open between August 31st and September 13th, invoking the high number of coronavirus cases popping up daily in the USA.

After calling Americans “selfish” for giving a green light to Flushing Meadows' slam almost two weeks ago, the controversial Aussie has shared a tweet sent by Trevor Noah’s The Daily Show which depicted another way of interpreting the already famous phrase: “flattening the curve”.

The above post came as a response to the USA’s inability to slow down the spread of COVID-19 in a period when, in most countries, the number of infected people has gone down significantly. As we can see from the graph, the United Kingdom, Canada, France, Italy, and Australia are all in a far better situation than Donald Trump’s America.

On June 25th, there were over 37,000 cases of COVID-19 infections, a new record in a single day, states Johns Hopkins University. The current death toll in America stands at 126,000 and that’s a very large number – 25% of the world’s total coronavirus victims.

Why Nick Kyrgios is against US Open’s 2020 plans

In the middle of June, Chris Widmaier, USTA’s spokesman, said that the US Open is ready to move forward “as long as we get the approvals we need.” A day after, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo upheld Widmaier’s declarations, saying that the tournament will be held as planned without fans.

Following the two officials’ affirmations, Nick Kyrgios stepped forward with an opposing tweet: “People that live in the US, of course, are pushing [for] the Open to go ahead -selfish. I’ll get my hazmat suit ready for when I travel from Australia and then have to quarantine for 2 weeks on my return.”

Regarding the situation of the other Grand Slams, the French Open, which usually takes place at the end of May, has been postponed to September while Wimbledon has already been cancelled. Nick Kyrgios is currently ranked No. 40 in the world in men's singles and has won six ATP titles and reached eight ATP finals in his career.
