Garbine Muguruza joins the Stories from Tomorrow initiative

Two-time Grand Slam champion Garbine Muguruza, of Spain, has joined the "Stories from Tomorrow" initiative , an interactive social media fundraising initiative to support children around the world.

The Stories from Tomorrow initiative has been launched by actor Casey Affleck and his mother. As part of the initiative, Muguruza read two peoms - "Time" written by Amarise Fisher and "Poem for my cousin Santiago" written by Isabel , a 12-year-old girl from Guatemala on her social media account.

Others who are part of this initiative include Robert Redford, Alfre Woodard, Common, Matt Damon, Don Cheadle, Michelle Monaghan, Casey Affleck, Vanessa Kirby, Jason Segel and Mathew Broderick.

According to the website Sport.es, Muguruza says, "As soon as I found out about the idea for 'Stories from Tomorrow', I knew I had to support it and act as a speaker for all these girls who dare to share their feelings by writing these beautiful texts. Reading and writing are fundamental instruments for young people to express themselves and grow."

Donations made through this campaign will support 'Feeding America' which looks at helping in the field of eradicating child hunger and 'Room to Read', which helps at providing literacy and education program for girls across the world.

Since turning professional in 2012, Garbine Muguruza has won seven singles titles on the tour, including two Grand Slams titles - the 2016 French Open and the 2017 Wimbledon Championships. In doubles, she has won 5 titles, including reaching the finals at the 2015 WTA Finals and the 2014 French Open semifinals with compatriot Carla Suárez Navarro. At the 2020 Australian Open in Melbourne, Muguruza defeated four seeded players, including fifth seeded Elina Svitolina, fourth seeded Simona Halep and ninth seeded Kiki Bertens to reach her fourth Grand Slam final where she was beaten by 14th seeded American Sofia Kenin in the final. In June 2017, Muguruza said that she had become an Ambassador for the international education NGO Room to Read. She is currently ranked No. 16 in the world.
