Patrick Mouratoglou: Don't know how reasonable it is to try and make US Open happen

Patrick Mouratoglou, the coach of Serena Williams, says that he is not sure if it is a good move to go ahead with the US Open Grand Slam event in late August in New York given that the number of cases continue to rise in the United States.

According to Sky Sports, Mouratoglou, who has coached Williams since 2012 and is currently organising his UTS series in France, says, ''With what's happening at the moment in the US, with the number of cases of COVID-19 going higher and higher every day, I don't think how that can happen. From outside, it looks a bit crazy to try to make it happen. So, I don't know if it's a good move. I wouldn't say that if the situation was more stable like it is in Europe, then it's a different story. But in the US and especially in New York and around New York is... I mean, the number of cases is increasing incredibly. So, I don't know how reasonable that is to try to make it happen."

Mouratoglou says he would not be surprised if the New York government officials decide to cancel the tournament in order to prioritise health. "And I don't know if last minute the governor of New York will decide to cancel it because of course health first.' I think it's completely possible that two weeks before he [Andrew Cuomo] decides I mean, considering the situation, this is not reasonable to bring people from all over the world there, mix them together and potentially put them in touch with one of the countries that has the most cases at the moment.''

The US Open is scheduled to be held in New York from August 24th to September 13th. Rafael Nadal and Bianca Andreescu are the men's and women's singles defending champions. The tournament will be held without fans this year due to the global pandemic. It is usually the final Grand Slam of the season but this year, it would be the second Grand Slam of the season - after the French Open was moved to September and Wimbledon was cancelled for the first time since World War II. Patrick Mouratoglou has said that Serena Williams has been training hard ahead of the US Open and he has been sending her feedback on her training videos.
