Dustin Johnson wants to stay in Number 1 spot
Dustin Johnson says he would like to stay the world’s best golfer for a long time to come. He took back the No. 1 spot after he won the Northern Trust open at TPC Boston in Norton Massachusetts on Sunday.
The 36-year-old American is the 5th player to reach the coveted number 1 spot this year. The others are John Rahm, Justin Thomas, Rory McIlroy and Brooks Koepka.
The last time Johnson was the best player in the world, was last year May.
“I’m proud of being the No. 1 player in the world and I would like to stay up there for a long while,” Johnson said. “There has been a few players on the top of the ranks this year. The last time I was No. 1, I stayed there for a while. It is my goal to see how long I can stay number 1 on the rankings.@
Johnson scored a winning total of 254 on Sunday, with an excellent 63. His countryman, Harris English, took second place with 265.
The open was first of three knockout rounds, which will reach it high point with the Tour- championship tournament in Atlanta. This will start on 4 September and the eventual FedEx Cup champion will be rewarded with a hefty $15 million.
Dustin Johnson’s goal is to end the season as champion“I haven’t been able to win it even though I got close a few times. It is definitely something I would like on my CV before I put away my professional clubs.
In the meantime, Rory McIlroy, former No. 1 and currently swinging in at No.3, admitted his heart is not in his game and he was just “going through the motions.” The golfer said the lack of atmosphere, without any spectators, is influencing his game in a bad way.
McIlroy was No.1 before tournaments were put on hold in March this year due to Covid-19.
“I want to get the fire, the intensity back, but I haven’t been able to. It is partly due to the lack of atmosphere, and partly my bad play. I can’t find inspiration,” he admitted.
In the past six tournaments, McIlroy could only finish in the top 20 once.
It is clear Dustin Johnson is not experiencing the same difficulties in his golf game.
