WTA players dominate Forbes list of Highest-Paid Female Athletes

Forbes magazine has released its list of Top 10 highest earning female athletes for the period of  June 1, 2019, and June 1, 2020 and not surprisingly, players from the WTA Tour dominate the list, taking nine of the Top 10 spots. The survey takes into account prize money, salaries, bonuses, endorsements and appearance fees during the period mentioned.

Naomi Osaka leads the way as WTA players dominate the Forbes list of Highest-Paid Female Athletes 2020

Japanese sensation Naomi Osaka tops the list with a record total of $37.4 million, which is an all-time earnings record for a female athlete in a single year. 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams comes in at No. 2 in the list, followed by top-ranked Ash Barty, of Australia at No. 3.

The only non-WTA player on the list is Alex Morgan, co-captain of the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team, who is at No. 10 on the list. Here is a look at the Top 10 list as per Forbes magazine.

2. Serena Williams Total Earnings: $36 million Prize Money: $4 million Endorsements: $32 million

3. Ashleigh Barty Total Earnings: $13.1 million Prize Money: $10.1 million Endorsements: $3 million

4. Simona Halep Total Earnings: $10.9 million Prize Money: $6.9 million Endorsements: $4 million

5. Bianca Andreescu Total Earnings: $8.9 million Prize Money: $4.9 million Endorsements: $4 million

6. Garbine Muguruza Total Earnings: $6.6 million Prize Money: $2.1 million Endorsements: $4.5 million

7. Elina Svitolina Total Earnings: $6.4 million Prize Money: $5.4 million Endorsements: $1 million

8. Sofia Kenin Total Earnings: $5.8 million Prize Money: $4.8 million Endorsements: $1 million

9. Angelique Kerber Total Earnings: $5.3 million Prize Money: $1.3 million Endorsements: $4 million

10. Alex Morgan Total Earnings: $4.6 million Salary/bonus: $400,000 Endorsements: $4.2 million

The list of highest-paid female athletes has been topped by a tennis player every year since Forbes started tracking the data in 1990. Others who have topped the list in the past include Steffi Graf, Martina Hingis, Serena Williams, Venus Williams and Maria Sharapova.

Roger Federer topped the overall list for men and women combined with an estimated $106.3 million in total earnings over the last year..

Naomi Osaka and Serena Williams will both be competing in New York later this week for the Western & Southern Open followed by the US Open Grand Slam event. Several of the top women on the WTA Tour have decided to skip the US Open due to concerns about travelling at this time including Barty, Halep and Svitolina.
