2020 US Open: Anastasia Sevastova nips Coco Gauff's US Open ambitions in 1st round

Latvia’s Anastasia Sevastova, seeded 31st, ended American hopes as she beat teenager Coco Gauff in the first round at the 2020 US Open. Sevastova won 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 in two hours and two minutes. Sevastova will play Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk in the second round. Kostyuk defeated Russian Daria Kasatkina 6-1, 6-2.  

Another American teen, 15-year-old Robin Montgomery also exited the Major in the first round against Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putinsteva. The 23rd seed made the most of the wildcard entrant’s nerves alongside playing her game to the fullest to clinch a 6-1, 6-3 win in 64 minutes.

After the match, Putintseva said, of her opponent, “She has a big game and has some big shots. She has a lot of good years in front of her. She was a little inconsistent, but she’s only 15 so I only expect to see her getting better over the next few years.”

Putinsteva faces Vera Lapko next. The Belarusian beat Swiss Viktorija Golubic 1-6, 7-6(2), 6-2 in their first-round match.

2020 US Open: Rebecca Peterson only seed ousted, so far

Alison Riske also advanced to the second round. The 13th seeded American moved past Tatjana Maria of Germany 6-3, 6-2 to set up a round-of-64 clash against fellow American Ann Li. Li beat Dutchwoman Arantxa Rus 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 in their first-round match.

There will be another American derby between Cici Bellis and the 28th-seeded Jennifer Brady in the second round. Bellis ousted German Tamara Korpatsch 6-7(13), 6-3, 6-2 while Brady beat Russian Anna Blinkova 6-3, 6-2.

Ukraine’s Kateryna Bondarenko and eighth-seeded Petra Martic will play each other for a place in the third round. Bondarenko won against American wildcard entrant Allie Kiick 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 while the Croatian beat Tereza Martincova of the Czech Republic 5-7, 6-2, 6-4.

Poland’s Magda Linette and Danka Kovinic will play each other in the second round. The 24th seed Linette defeated Australian Maddison Inglis 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 while the Montenegrin Kovinic got past Inglis’ compatriot Lizette Cabrera 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.

Fourteenth seed Anett Kontaveit and 11th seed Elena Rybakina also advanced to the next round. Kontaveit defeated Danielle Collins 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 while Rybakina beat Katarina Zavatska 6-3, 6-0. Kontaveit will play Slovenian Kaja Juvan in the second round while Rybakina will play Shelby Rogers.

Rogers’ countrywoman Madison Brengle will take on 19th seed Dayana Yastremska in the second round. Brengle defeated Arina Rodionova of Australia 6-2, 6-2 while the Ukrainian beat Rodionova’s compatriot Astra Sharma 6-3, 6-7(4), 7-6(2).

Lastly, in the top half of the women’s singles draw of the 2020 US Open, Kirsten Flipkens and Jessica Pegula will play each other in the second round. Flipkens upset the 32nd seed Rebecca Peterson 7-6(1), 6-4 while Pegula won against Maria Bouzkova 3-6, 6-2, 7-6(3).
