ATP US Open: Daniil Medvedev and Matteo Berrettini continue to charge

The 3rd seed and last year's US Open finalist Daniil Medvedev has stayed on the title course, toppling J.J Wolf 6-3, 6-3, 6-2 in an hour and 48 minutes. The American gave his best to keep in touch with a great rival, earning two breaks and hitting many winners as Daniil. Still, the Russian sprayed only ten unforced errors, taking over half of the return points to grab seven breaks from ten chances, sailing into the last 16 where he plays against Frances Tiafoe. With 33 winners, Medvedev had the upper hand on the court, dominating on both serve and return to seal the deal in less than two hours and preserve energy for the upcoming rounds. Wolf netted an easy forehand in the fifth game to find himself down, allowing the Russian to seal the opener with a volley winner in game nine for a 6-3. Daniil grabbed breaks in games four and six of set number two, serving for it at 5-1 but getting broken to keep the American in.

Medvedev made no mistakes at 5-3, landing an ace down the T line to move two sets to love in front. They traded breaks at the beginning of the third set and the Russian clinched another one at 1-1 after a loose forehand from J.J, holding at love with a service winner to cement the advantage. Medvedev broke again at 4-2, holding at love in game eight to emerge at the top and stay on the title course. In the longest match of the day, Vasek Pospisil took down another seed for his best result at the US Open, beating Roberto Bautista Agut 7-5, 2-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in three hours and 40 minutes. The Canadian fired 71 winners and 65 unforced errors, taming his strokes nicely and starting all over from set number four to oust the 8th seed and extend his impressive run. Vasek scored four breaks and gave serve away thrice, finding his best strokes when it mattered the most to cross the finish line first, winning eight points more than the Spaniard.

After nine commanding holds, Roberto had to play against two set points at 4-5, staying alive and missing two opportunities on the return in the next game. Pospisil secured the set with a break at love in game 12, fending off seven break points at the beginning of the second set to keep his initial shot intact. Still, the Spaniard was the better player in this part of the match, earning breaks in games three and five to win it 6-2. Bautista Agut forged an early lead in the third set's first game, serving well and closing it at 5-4 to take a massive step towards the finish line. It wasn't to be for him, though, suffering a late break in set number four and losing ground in the decider to propel Vasek over the finish line and end his journey much earlier than he expected. Frances Tiafoe is the only American left in the draw after a convincing 6-2, 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Marton Fucsovics in an hour and 44 minutes.

Frances lost serve once and produced six breaks, drawing more than 30 unforced errors from Marton and staying in front all the time for his first notable result in New York. The 6th seed and last year's semi-finalist Matteo Berrettini has been on fire in New York this week, toppling Casper Ruud 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 in two hours and three minutes to race into the last 16. The Italian had 40 winners and unforced errors, overpowering the Norwegian and fending off all five break chances to mount the pressure on the other side of the net. Ruud got broken four times, fighting bravely in sets one and two before fading from the court to push Berrettini through.
