Jordan Thompson reacts to earning biggest payday of his career at US Open
Australian tennis player Jordan Thompson, 26, was in great spirits after reaching the US Open round-of-16 as he is now set for the biggest payday of his career.
Thompson, ranked at No. 63 in the world, saw off Kazakhstan's Mikhail Kukushkin in straight sets 7-5 6-4 6-1 to make the round-of-16 at a Grand Slam for the first time in his career.
Thompson, who has earned $2,399,127 over the course of his career, is now guaranteed to leave the US Open with at least $250.000.
"There’s a big payday obviously. 4th round in US dollars, I actually haven’t checked to see how much it is but I assume it’s a good chunk & probably the most I’ve ever earned, so couldn’t be happier about that," Thompson said, per Ravi Ubha.
Thompson ready for CoricFormer world No. 43 Thompson will be aiming to continue his great US Open campaign when he meets Coric in the round-of-16.
Coric, a two-time ATP champion, put up a miraculous comeback to stun No. 4 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-7 (2) 6-4 4-6 7-5 7-6 (4).
Tsitsipas was up by two sets to one and led 5-1 in the fourth set, before Coric put up a stunning comeback.
No. 27 seed Coric saved a total of six match points en route to beating Tsitsipas.
"He’s a quality player as well. I feel like I’ve got nothing to lose...I’ll give it my all as I always do," Thompson claimed.
Meanwhile, rising French star Corentin Moutet admitted playing No. 23 seed Dan Evans was stressful.
Moutet, ranked at No. 77 in the world, came from a set down to beat world No. 31 Evans 4-6 6-3 7-6 (5) 7-6 (1) in the US Open second round.
"It was different than against other guys on tour. He can do good slice, good volleys, many things actually. I had to do more things than I have to do normally than just play powerful and serve good. It was a close match and really stressful for me," Moutet said.
Meanwhile, 2017 Nitto ATP Finals runner-up Davis Goffin is enjoying the suite life at the US Open.
"It’s amazing. It’s the first time I have a suite," Goffin said. "It’s a great idea, great organization. We can order food, we can watch the match on Ashe. You can rest and sleep a bit. It’s perfect for the tournament. You have food, fridge..."
