Elina Svitolina: A phenomenal talent

The Ukrainian is currently ranked 5th in the WTA rankings. On Instagram, she wrote enthusiastically, "I play for the game and something much bigger than myself. I play for the Passion." The 26-year-old has been ranked as high as third in the world.

This year, Svitolina finished a 19-9 win-to-loss record, winning two titles. The first came in March 2020, before the tour was stopped on account of the pandemic, in Monterrey, Mexico. She beat the Czech Republic's Marie Bouzkova in the final. Svitolina's second title of the year came in Strasbourg in September, post the tour's resumption. In the French event, she beat Kazakhstan's Elena Rybakina in the final to claim her 15th WTA career title.

This year, Svitolina played just the two Majors. She didn't play the US Open after skipping the American swing when the tour resumed in July.

At the Australian Open, she reached the third round before losing to eventual finalist Garbine Muguruza. Her best result at the Majors this year came at the French Open. In Paris, she reached the quarter-finals before losing to Argentine qualifier – and eventual semi-finalist – Nadia Podoroska. This was the third time Svitolina had reached the last-eight at Roland Garros, equalling her two previous best finishes there in 2015 and 2017. Her best results at the Majors have been reaching the semi-finals of the Australian Open and Wimbledon in 2019. Svitolina has also reached the quarter-finals of the US Open twice, in 2018 and 2019.

Elina Svitolina wrapped up her 2020 season at the Ostrava Open. She was the top-seed in the Czech tournament and received a first-round bye. She, however, exited in the second round following a straight-sets defeat to Greece's Maria Sakkari.
