The Roger Federer Foundation: on a mission to give children a future

Roger Federer is one of the most popular men on the planet, and not just thanks to his incredible grace on a tennis court. Over the past 17 years, endless sports pages have been written to celebrate the triumphs, successes, records, falls and come-backs of the Swiss Maestro, probably the most beloved sportsman by fans across the world.

But behind the successes, behind the records that led him to be probably the greatest tennis player of all time, there is a man with important values, such as humility, the desire to never give up. But Roger Federer is something else. He has always had a much more important goal at heart than a tennis ball sent across the court.

This translated with the Roger Federer Foundation. Founded in 2003, the year of Federer's first success on the Wimbledon lawns, the Foundation has always aimed to improve a world in which children living in poverty, are able to take control of their future and shape it, such as can be read on the organization's website.

Since then, the Foundation has grown hand in hand with the resounding success of the Swiss, who has meanwhile become one of the greatest sportsmen ever. In 2006, the Foundation's profits were just over $ 400,000, while in 2018 they nearly $ 10 million. In fact, the increase has been constant over time. This year, Roger's organization has already earned three and a half million dollars just from his performance with Rafael Nadal in Cape Town, South Africa: the Match for Africa 6, also featuring Trevor Noah and Bill Gates

"We are currently conducting our programs in six Southern African countries (Botswana, Malawi, Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe and South Africa), plus Switzerland. Since its inception, the Foundation has spent $ 52 million on its school education initiatives conducted in seven thousand kindergartens and elementary schools," says the organization.

This year, despite an unprecedented moment of global crisis, the Roger Federer Foundation donated a million dollars to support 64,000 African children and their families.

A post published on the Foundation's official Twitter profile said: "COVID-19 has caused a health and economic crisis. As a humanitarian response, the Roger Federer Foundation has guaranteed $ 1 million to provide food for 64,000 at-risk children and their families. families, through our partners in Africa, now that schools are closed."

Roger skipped most of the season this year due to double surgery on his right knee, but despite that the Swiss has managed to focus on his foundation, and the obvious beneficial effects it is having on the people he is trying to help.
