Stan Wawrinka reveals he tested positive for virus during Christmas
Three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka has revealed that he got infected with COVID-19 around Christmas and it hampered his preparation for the new season.
Wawrinka, who will turn 36 years of age in March, is now trying to get in shape ahead of the Australian Open.
Wawrinka, who claimed his maiden Grand Slam title at the Australian Open in 2014, didn't have a good experience with the coronavirus.
"I’m trying to get in shape. I actually got positive during Christmas, so I had to stay more than 10 days at home, so I completely lost all the work I’ve been doing all the off season,” Wawrinka told AFR Weekend.
“I was really feeling bad during [the first] five days but the symptoms, you keep it, and are really more tired every day and that lasts a few weeks and there is still some symptoms that you get and wonder why.
“It was not a good experience, I had a tough time at home. Now I finally start to see that I am feeling better but it can touch you badly and it’s important to be really careful.”
Wawrinka understands the local authorities72 players were placed in strict quarantine upon arriving to Melbourne for the Australian Open.
A number of players complained about having to be in quarantine but Wawrinka understood the situation.
"Victoria is going well because you’ve been through five, six months of complete lockdown, so when we arrive here as a guest we need to adapt,” Wawrinka said.
“I had a nice room, big room, I’ve been able to practise every day, going out for five hours, so the preparation has been going well and for that I think the organisation, the amount of effort to make so many people coming here, it’s huge.”
