Greg Rusedski: Dominic Thiem will be back stronger as a player

Former British No. 1 Greg Rusedski believes that Dominic Thiem will be fine as he says it takes about a year for a player to adjust after winning his maiden Grand Slam.

Thiem, 27, captured his maiden Grand Slam title at the US Open last year. 

Since then, Thiem has been very inconsistent and on Sunday he exited the French Open in the first round. 

Thiem was up by two sets before Pablo Andujar created a stunning comeback to win 4-6 5-7 6-3 6-4 6-4.  

"With all the effort needed to win his 1st major @ThiemDomi has not managed to get his form back yet. For most players it takes at least a year to adjust after winning their first major. He will be back stronger as a player. Well done too @AndujarPablo for another great win," Rusedski said in a Twitter post. 

Thiem says his game wasn't there 

After Andujar forced a decider, he started the third set with a break. 

However, Thiem kept his focus as he broke back Andujar in the second game. 

But Andujar claimed another break in the fifth game and then held on to his serve the rest of the match to seal the win. 

"I was not struggling at all with my motivation, but the game was just not there today,” Thiem said. “Like all the shots are missing power. They are not accurate enough. I’m moving not well enough, so everything in my game there are some percents missing…. It’s just not good enough at the moment. And, yeah, it’s very tough situation.

“It’s amazing to reach such a big goal (of a Grand Slam title), but at the same time something is different after. As I said before the tournament, it’s a big learning process. Despite the loss — which hurts so much — I still hope I can bounce back stronger than before. 

“But right now I don’t know when the moment is coming.”
