Wimbledon: Sofia Kenin, Iga Swiatek enjoy no-fuss route to the second round

Fourth seed Sofia Kenin reached the second round of Wimbledon on Monday with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Chinese qualifier Xinyu Wang. The American needed just 63 minutes to complete her victory.

Kenin saved the only break point she faced while converting four of the eight break points, she had on Wang’s serve. She had 19 winners and 17 unforced errors to her opponent’s 22 winners and 15 unforced errors. In the second round, Kenin will play a fellow American in either Christina McHale or Madison Brengle.

Fellow American, Kristie Ahn also reached the round-of-64 on the opening day of the Championships. Ahn, who’s playing in the main draw as a lucky loser, took down Britain’s Heather Watson in their opener. Ahn came from a set down to claim a 2-6, 7-6(3), 8-6 win. In the second round, of what’s to be her last Wimbledon, Ahn will play compatriot Sloane Stephens.

Meanwhile, qualifiers Katie Volynets and Danielle Lao were the two Americans who lost their respective openers. Irina-Camelia Begu defeated Volynets 6-4, 7-5 while Briton Katie Boulter, a wildcard recipient, ousted Lao 6-7(6), 6-3, 6-4.

Wimbledon: Iga Swiatek off to a flyer

In the second round, Begu will play either Varvara Gracheva or 26th seed Petra Martic. Boulter will take on second seed Aryna Sabalenka for a place in the third round.

Viktorija Golubic posted an upset over 29th seed Veronika Kudermetova. The Swiss came through a two-hour-45-minute battle against the Russian 3-6, 6-1, 11-9. Next up for Golubic is Danielle Collins.

Eighteenth seed Elena Rybakina also advanced to the second round. The Kazakh took 66 minutes to defeat France’s Kristina Mladenovic 6-4, 6-0. Either Japan’s Misaki Doi or American qualifier Claire Liu will be Rybakina’s round-of-64 opponent.

Lastly, seventh seed Iga Swiatek reached the second round at Wimbledon. The Pole ousted Su-Wei Hsieh 6-4, 6-4 in an hour and 16 minutes. The 2020 French Open champion, who’s playing in the Championships' main draw for the first time in her career, hit 20 winners to Hsieh’s 16 and had 18 unforced errors to the latter’s 23. Swiatek will play either Marie Bouzkova or Vera Zvonareva for a spot in the round-of-32.
