Wimbledon: Angelique Kerber, Jelena Ostapenko clinch hard-fought wins to reach 3R
Coco Gauff posted a 6-4, 6-3 win over Elena Vesnina to reach the third round at Wimbledon on Thursday. The 20th-seeded American needed an hour and 11 minutes to complete the match.
Gauff, who reached the fourth round at the Championships in her debut in 2019, hit 19 winners and had 14 unforced errors. Vesnina, on the other hand, had 13 winners and 19 unforced errors for the match. Gauff converted four of seven break points while saving two of the three break points, she faced.
In the third round, Gauff will play Kaja Juvan. The Slovenian beat France’s Clara Burel 6-3, 6-4 in their round-of-64 clash.
Sorana Cirstea took down 12th seed Victoria Azarenka in the second round. The Romanian came from a break down in the deciding set to post a 7-6(5), 3-6, 6-4 win over the Belarusian in two hours and 19 minutes. This is the third time in her career that Cirstea has reached the third round at Wimbledon and her first since 2012.
For a place in the fourth round, she’ll take on Emma Raducanu. The Briton ousted Marketa Vondrousova 6-2, 6-4 to reach the round-of-32. The world no. 338’s also the British woman left in the women’s draw.

The Australian needed two hours and seven minutes to complete the win. In the third round, Tomljanovic will play Jelena Ostapenko.
The Latvian was almost at the precipice of defeat against the 31st-seeded Daria Kasatkina in the deciding set before overturning the proceedings in her favour to claim a 3-6, 6-1, 8-6 victory. The Russian served for the match twice and in the third set was up 6-5, 30-0 up before losing the next four games and consequentially, the match. Ostapenko hit 48 winners and unforced errors apiece to Kasatkina’s 11 winners and 24 unforced errors.
Aliaksandra Sasnovich set up a third-round clash against former champion Angelique Kerber. The Belarusian defeated Nao Hibino 6-4, 7-6(4) in their round-of-64 meeting.
Meanwhile, the 25th-seeded Kerber and Spain’s Sara Sorribes Tormo played one of the most exciting matches of the 2021 Wimbledon in their second-round encounter. At the end of three hours and 19 minutes, the German went on to prevail 7-5, 5-7, 6-4.
