Expect surprises from Roger Federer, says former French Open winner
The 1978 French Open winner and current Simona Halep's agent Virginia Ruzici believes that Roger Federer can triumph on the biggest stage again. The Swiss player did not have a good second half of the year but he aims to defend his Australian Open title in January. 'I do not know what to say if he can win a Grand Slam title or not', Ruzici told Gazeta Sporturilor. 'Wimbledon is the tournament where Roger has more chances. This year he had too many up and down. It's my opinion, I may be wrong, he knows. He has an amazing experience, he is the biggest player tennis has ever had. The most successful one, the most complete in terms of technique, the most talented. Knowing his ambition and hunger, you can expect some surprises.'
Ruzici also commented on the younger players' potential: 'Khachanov was impressive at the end of the year, he and Zverev are ready to break through but you do not know when. One thing is to win in Bercy or the ATP Finals, playing at the best of three sets, and one thing is winning a Grand Slam title, where you play at the best of five sets. Khachanov is strong, tall, he moves well on all the surfaces.'
Federer worked hard during the off-season in Dubai. The Swiss player hit with several players including Stefanos Tsitsipas, Robin Haase and Lucas Pouille, and he was extremely focused. Just a few fans were lucky to see the 37-year-old training, and Federer posted no photos on social media featuring him at the gym and on the tennis court neither. Speaking to SRF, the Basel native said: 'The focus on the off season preparation was a lot on physical practice. I did a lot of fitness and leg exercises, and also at tennis practice I worked very hard to make mysel ready to cope with Djokovic or Nadal or other baseline players on slower surfaces.'
