Ferrero: 'Serena Williams has a strong personality. I admire her a lot'
In an interview, during the Champions Tennis event in London earlier last month the former world No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero commented on the controversial US Open final between Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka. The American player argued with the Spanish chair umpire, Carlos Ramos.
Ferrero did not blame the 23-time Major winner and understood the big situation Serena was going through. 'She is a player with a lot of character and you need to have it to do what she has done until now for being the player with most Major titles in the Open Era, to be the best player ever, you need to have a strong character and be very competitive. She may have regretted it looking back at the match, there were two controversial cases, but I admire her a lot, she has achieved a lot in tennis, I hope she keeps forward and she doesn't have any other controversial episodes (laughter)', Ferrero concluded.
Serena will play the Hopman Cup next in Perth. Speaking about her upcoming appearance in Perth, the American said: 'I always enjoy playing in Western Australia in front of the crowd at Perth Arena. The Aussie fans are so warm and supportive and the Hopman Cup always gives me a great start to the season, especially ahead of the Australian Open. I haven’t played with Frances in mixed doubles before, but have watched him from afar this year. He has a very bright future and I’m looking forward to being in court with him, it will be a lot of fun.'
