Jim Courier doesn't condemn Serena Williams for US Open outburst

In an interview to Herald Sun, the former world No. 1 Jim Courier commented on Serena Williams's controversial US Open final earlier this year against Naomi Osaka. Courier understood the pressure and the emotion Williams was going through. 'Tantrum is not a word I often use to describe tennis but emotion is a word that I would choose to use as a positive for tennis', Courier told Herald Sun. 'Emotion comes in many different forms. Emotion can cause people to sit on the edge of their seats at home when they are watching, or in the stands they pay a little bit more attention because they can tell the players are emotionally invested. We want people to know that the players care and we want people watching to care. You don’t want a bunch of robots out there playing.'

Courier also shared his love for the Australian Open: 'I don’t know what it would feel like to be anywhere but in Melbourne the last two weeks of January, to be honest. I feel like most of my life I have been there. It is going to be exciting to be part of Channel 9’s coverage. They have built an impressive team and I am very pleased to be part of it.'
