Roger Federer not sure about 2020 season: 'I am playing in 2019, then...'
Roger Federer is not totally sure that he will be competing in the 2020 season. In an interview to the Swiss channel SRF, the 20-time Grand Slam champion said he will definitely play in 2019, and then he will decide. After his knee surgery in 2016 Federer's mentality changed and he just thinks year by year. 'I have got an idea now of the planning of 2019, although I am not quite sure yet what exactly is going to happen this spring with grass, clay and hard. I am in ongoing discussion with team, and then later we will see if there is going to be another more year or not.'
In recent times Federer often spoke about his future retirement. At the US Open following his opening round match against Yoshihito Nishioka the 37-year-old said that fans should enjoy watching him play because it will not last for a long time, and then he clarified that he has no plans to retire from tennis yet.
In Perth, he retained the concept again: Federer then clarified he does not see his retirement from tennis in sight: 'I'm not planning too far ahead, just because you know family comes first and once that's fine then it's a question about how is my motivation and how is my body. I need results, I need a happy body if you like because if I wake up hurt every day I mean then obviously that wouldn't be a lot of fun. But I wake up and I feel not like an old man so that's a good sign already, and then we'll see. But I have pretty much a schedule planned for the year, but not beyond that just because I don't plan that far ahead to be honest.'
