Del Potro:'I never believed I would have so much strength in tough moments'
In a recent interview, Juan Martin del Potro reflected on his knee injury suffered at the Shanghai Masters during his third round match against Borna Coric. Del Potro admitted he did not expect something so serious. He is back to practice on clay and he hopes to recover in time for the Australian Open. 'It was an unthinkable injury, doing a silly movement, I ended up on the knee on the floor and I got up like if nothing happened but in the following point, I could not continue', the 30-year-old recognized. 'It was strange. I had to retire, but I never thought it would be a fracture. It was hard mentally. It was difficult to leave China and I still was not aware that I had broken the knee. I thought about how much time I would be out and I was thinking about the Masters. They first did not completely rule out my appearance in London, but then we eventually decided it.'
Del Potro had three wrist surgeries in the past and he knows how it feels not to be able to compete for a long time: 'You always have doubtful moments, to completely give up. I suffered a lot and you do not want to go through it again. And I do not know if for my own love or proudness, or for the love of the game, that I keep fighting and playing again. I never believed that I would have this strength inside me to go through these problems. I was world No. 3 after all what happened to me.'
