Roger Federer reflects on win over Frances Tiafoe, praises American
Swiss tennis star Roger Federer dropped a praise on rising American Frances Tiafoe after their Hopman Cup clash.
The 37-year-old saw off world No. 39 Tiafoe as he lost just five games during the match 6-4 6-1.
The Swiss blew an early break point in the second game of the match but broke the American in the 10th game to claim the opening set.
Tiafoe, 20, never recovered from getting broken in the 10th game of the first set as he lost the opening five games of the second set.
The American escaped a second-set bagel but Federer served out to love in the seventh game to clinch the win.
Federer and Tiafoe previously met three times at the ATP level.
The record 20-time Grand Slam champion Federer holds a 3-0 head-to-head record against the American.
''I like the energy he [Tiafoe] has, he's a really positive guy off court as well. I played another good match. A great start to the season for me. I'm very pleased and couldn't be happier right now," Federer said post-match, per George Bellshaw.
Switzerland eventually beat the United States 2-1.
Former world No. 1 Serena Williams came from a set down to beat Switzerland's Belinda Bencic 4-6 6-4 6-3 and level it all at 1-1.
Yet, the United States fell short of a comeback as Federer and Bencic beat Tiafoe and Williams in a much-anticipated mixed doubles match 4-2 4-3 (3).
