Roger Federer: 'I have to beat the best guys, otherwise I may stop'

For Roger Federer, being competitive at the highest level is one of the main factors that encourage him to keep playing on tour. The Swiss wants to get far in the major tournaments. "I am playing and winning. Just playing, is not enough for my pleasure", said Federer in an interview to Tribune de Geneve. "I would deny saying that I do not care losing early in a tournament. I do not just want to be a part of the tournament, the enjoyment is also connected to the win. I also have to respect myself and be able to perform at a certain level. If I do not achieve it in every match or every week, it doesn't matter. But it needs to happen several times a year. It's to easy: what motivates me, in practice or match, it's knowing that I can still beat the best guys."
So when he won't be able to do it anymore, he will stop? 'It's a possibility, yes. It can also come from a too frequent pain, which does not allow you to give your best. Or repeated travels. But there is a priority: my family. If for my children or wife is not suitable anymore, then it will be a reason to retire."
Is he thinking about when to stop? "Yes, of course, at home for example. If you are at home, you do not have a planned tournament immediately or it comes to your mind. Or during holidays. I can question myself, asking me where I will be in a ten-year time, what will happen me? It's not directly connected to the decision to retire, but it's just the question on what my future will be. Having said that, I am aware that at some point I will not be a tennis player anymore.'
