Gael Monfils is very different than what people think, says Svitolina
In an interview, as quoted by the New York Times, Elina Svitolina commented on Gael Monfils's mindset and character. The Ukrainian player believes the Frenchman is sometimes judged too hard. “When I first got to know him, I was actually very surprised. Because what people think of him and what they say, he’s a very different person from that when the door is closed. He’s open, but he thinks a lot, analyzes a lot. He’s very different with me when we’re alone," said Svitolina, who is proud of her relationship with Monfils: “We’d like to be No. 1 at something at least. We’re not in tennis, yet, but for couples, I think we are."
Svitolina added: “The idea came from him more. He’s very creative, so we were talking about it, and he came up with G.E.M.S. Of course, when we go on the court we are very focused on what we have to do. But that’s only a couple of hours a day, and in the end, we have an off-court life. People are very curious how that’s going, so for us, it’s not a problem to share. We’re just happy that most people like it and think it’s a cool idea.”
Monfils said: “She is a hard worker, very professional. Sometimes even too professional, I think. Because there has to be a balance. Definitely, I bring a little bit more joy to her, but she will bring me more disciplined as well.”
