You can learn a lot from Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, says Thiem

In an interview with the New York Times, Dominic Thiem shared what he can learn from Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. For the second time after Prague in 2017, the Austrian is playing in Team Europe with the Spaniard and the Swiss. "You learn a lot from them," admitted Thiem speaking in Geneva, Switzerland. "Just the way they approach their tennis, how much hard work they put in before, during and after a match. Also, how they analyze their opponent’s tactics and when to use them during a match. What’s also nice is how much they help you during the Laver Cup matches, which they wouldn’t do on the tour. They all offer tactics and coaching suggestions. Especially, Roger, he’s great that way."

Recalling his first year in the Laver Cup, Thiem added: "That was the first year, and nobody knew what to expect. The atmosphere was just incredible. It was sold out for every match, and everyone was cheering so loud that we couldn’t even hear each other. And just being in the locker room with those guys was really fun."

Thiem believes tennis is as competitive as ever: "Every single guy in the top 100 or in a Grand Slam main draw is so fit. They can run for five hours. So, if you lose 10 or 20 per cent, there is no way you can beat these guys."

Thiem will play in Beijing and Shanghai in October, then Vienna, Paris and eventually the ATP Finals in London.
