Rod Laver: 'I would like to play Roger Federer using modern rackets'

In an interview to the New York Times the Australian legend Rod Laver spoke about his career and today's players. Laver said: “Oh, I’d like to play Roger Federer. But I’d like him to use my wooden racket, and I’ll use his modern one.”

On Laver's multiple Calendar Grand Slam, Federer added: "It’s an amazing accomplishment, no doubt about it. It’s also not just what he achieved, but also the way he carries himself. He’s humble, and he never takes himself too seriously.”

Laver said: "Turning pro was the best thing I ever did. By playing those guys, who were the best, I learned what I had to do to beat them. Every point counted. When I came off five years of playing like that, I had improved out of sight from when I was an amateur. I was thinking, ‘These guys, they’re not very tough at all."

Federer spoke about Davis Cup taking place over just one week from this year. During the year, also other team events like Laver Cup itself and ATP Cup take place. "There were places in the past four different Davis Cup matches. Now it's less than that. Is it (the calendar) still going to be like that in 10 years? We don't know. We'll have more information in six months."
