Michael Berrer: Rafael Nadal is rather tense, Roger Federer is relaxed and has fun
Former German tennis player Michael Berrer thinks world No. 2 Rafael Nadal looks a bit tense on the court, while record 20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer looks more relaxed.
Berrer, a former world No. 42, now works as a coach and his main focus is on the mental coaching as he absolutely believes that mental strength is one of the keys to success on the biggest stage.
Novak Djokovic, a 17-time Grand Slam champion, has always been known for his exceptional mental strength and Berrer thinks the Serb looks serious on the court and he considers him as a "mentally ideal.".
“Rafael Nadal is rather tense, while Roger Federer is relaxed and has fun. Novak Djokovic is very serious," Berrer told tennis MAGAZIN.
When it comes to the younger generation, Berrer is impressed by world No. 8 Matteo Berrettini as he thinks the Italian has a great mental strength.
Berrettini, who made his maiden Grand Slam semifinal at the US Open last year, has won three ATP titles throughout his career.
"Berrettini has been working with a mental trainer since he was 15. He accompanies him to all his tournaments," Berrer said.
During his interview, Berrer also acknowledged that younger players need to have a clear goal and then fully dedicate themselves to achieving it.
"Young players in particular should aim to get into the top-10, for example. You have to know for what you are training for," Berrer said.
Berrer recently explained why Djokovic, Nadal and Federer have remained dominant for so longThere hasn't been a Grand Slam champion outside the Big Three group since Swiss Stan Wawrinka won the 2016 US Open after beating Djokovic in the final.
"If we look at Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, for example who have dominated men's tennis for years, you can see that they are constantly evolving," Berrer told tennis MAGAZIN.
"The game today is very different from how it was played a few years ago. They continuously question themselves and experiment in all areas. Good things are adopted and practiced as a routine. What does not work is abolished and replaced.
Exactly this experimentation is also what successful start-ups do and can help many companies, for example with digitization initiatives and in the area of innovation, to become faster and more effective. In addition: Top tennis players always think in the overall system and ask the question: What are the effects of individual adjustments on the whole?"
