Davis Cup organizer: We cannot control what Roger Federer thinks
At the 2018 US Open, Roger Federer said that the Davis Cup could not become the Pique Cup, as the FC Barcelona defender is the investor of the event. Speaking to Marca about these Federer's comments, Galo Blanco said: 'What I know is that Gerard had a dream and it occurred to a footballer. If it occurred to a tennis player, it would not have generated such a big fuss. It's the project of his life and if he is doing everything possible to make it happen and (to make) the tournament successful. We cannot control what Federer thinks.'
Meanwhile speaking to Telegraph on the new format of the Davis Cup, the ITF President David Haggerty said: 'The reason that we feel so passionate about the Davis Cup is, as the governing body, the federation for tennis on a worldwide basis, 200 nations develop tennis in their countries. And the benefits of Davis Cup by the players playing gives us resources to distribute funding to the nations that can run junior tournaments that they lose money on, and have pro circuit events that they’re investing into the future of players, so that we’re really developing the next generation of players. And that’s why it’s so important to us and why we believe having one competition, the Davis Cup, would be great for tennis. From a broadcast and streaming perspective, I think the world will be following because of the 18 teams that will be there.'
