Robin Haase to play 2019 Davis Cup: I can't refuse such an amount of money

In an interview to Dutch site Nos, Robin Haase said he will play the Davis Cup finals in late November mainly due to money reasons. The team competition will take place in the last week of the tennis season, but it offers a lot of money. 'It gives a player around $150,000,' Haase said. 'I am not in the position to refuse such an amount. Some of the top 20 players may be able to do it, but I don't.'

And yet, Haase doesn't approve the new format. He believes that ITF copied ATP's ideas. 'It's ridiculous how the whole project went,' said Haase. 'The ITF and Kosmos quickly changed the format in order to keep the step with ATP, and I an afraid Davis Cup may disappear in one or two years. I always played tennis because it's my passion. Many players can make tennis as a living. Me too. However, that's not the reason why I started. It was always an honour to compete for my country.'

Commenting on the Laver Cup taking place in late September two weeks after the US Open (the event was founded by Roger Federer), Haase concluded: 'Federer and his management were okay with setting that time, and that place was free on the calendar. You cannot blame them.'

Haase had a 24-31 match win/loss record this year on the ATP Tour. He ended his season losing to Philipp Kohlschreiber at the Rolex Paris Masters first round after going through qualies.
