Tommy Haas returns to Delray Beach Open for the ATP Champions Tour Event
A former world no. 2 and the winner of 15 ATP titles Tommy Haas had ended his pro career in Kitzbuhel last year at the age of 39, scoring his last win on the Tour in Stuttgart against Roger Federer and joining the ATP Champions Tour in 2018. The German made a debut at the Legends Cup (beating Corretja, Ferrero and Moya to secure the title) and he scored four singles wins overall, enough for the third place behind Xavier Malisse and Mark Philippoussis. Now, Tommy will kick off the 2019 season at Delray Beach between February 17-19, returning to the court where he won an ATP title back in 2006 and leading a strong field that also includes Tim Henman, Mikael Pernfors and Wayne Ferreira in Team World and Fernando Gonzalez, Jessie Levine, Jan-Michael Gambill and Jay Berger in Team Americas.
Team World won titles in 2017 and 2018 and Haas will lead them in two months time, standing as the team captain. Tim Henman will make a debut in Delray Beach as well while Pernfors and Ferreira had a chance to play there before. Team Americas is led by experienced players who had a chance to compete in Delray Beach in the past, with Tim Henman and Jessie Levine opening the action on Friday, February 15, before the clash of Tommy Haas and Jan-Michael Gambill at 8:00 pm. Saturday brings three singles and one doubles clash before another pair of singles and doubles matches on Sunday.
“Delray Beach holds wonderful memories for me having played in that stadium so many times, felt so much energy from their incredible fans and of course winning in 2006,” said Haas. “I’m honored to be returning, captaining Team World and trying to be the first player to win both an ATP Tour title and ATP Champions Tour title in Delray.”
