Tennis Kenya Looking to Raise Funds for Team to Travel
Tennis - Tennis Kenya is hoping to raise $80,000 for the country's Davis Cup team to travel for build-up matches ahead of their Euro/ Africa Davis Cup Group Two Championships that will take place in Europe in February 2019. Kenani would like the team to travel to South Africa, Egypt and Botswana for build-up matches before they head to Europe for the Group II qualifiers which feature 18 teams, according to The Daily Nation in Kenya.
Kenani commented, "It is important that we have good preparations and present a strong team at the Davis Cup to earn promotion to Group One or retain our place in Group Two. The tour will give our players an edge before the competition."
Kenani is also not happy with the changes in rules for the Davis Cup which may put Kenya out of the Group II. “You can’t come up with rules when countries have already qualified,” said Kenani, adding that ITF is due to meet on Saturday to deliberate on the intended changes. Let them introduce those rules next year. We also can’t understand why sponsors should dictate the mode of play for events. That is totally unacceptable."
The century-old Davis Cup has will undergo a revamp starting next year with 18 countries being divided into six groups and each group fixture consisting of two singles and one doubles best-of-three-sets matches. The top teams from each group and the two highest-scoring runners-up will play the quarter-finals on Friday, with the semi-finals on Saturday and the final held on Sunday with the event being wrapped up in one week rather the current format of home and away ties spread over four weekends during the year.
