'We do not want fans to watch Davis Cup just for Nadal, Federer' -Organizer
Kosmos investor Galo Blanco insisted that the 2019 Davis Cup will be most teams and countries, not individual players, in order to protect the event's essence. Speaking about the ATP Cup and Davis Cup taking places respectively in January 2020 and November 2019 featuring a similar format, Blanco said: 'The ATP created this tournament that already existed many years ago in Dusseldorf. The format is similar but the rest has nothing to see. Our competition has a 119-year history. ATP makes an event for them where federations do not earn anything and it's exclusively for players.
You cannot compare them. In the Davis Cup, aside from the money that players take, you also have money for the federations. It will make younger players have an economical support. Another important difference is that fans will go to Australia to see the players. People who go to Madrid will see their own countries. We do not want to make them go to see Rafa Nadal or Roger Federer. We want them to come and watch Spain and Switzerland. It's an event where the tennis player represents his country and not to himself and this is the message that we want to send.'
Blanco also gave his thoughts on the Laver Cup: 'Laver Cup is good for tennis. But what worries me is that the tournament is as best as possible. Federer doing well in Laver Cup does not worry me. Davis Cup needed an image change since years. Last year France won Davis Cup and Lucas Pouille didn't beat any top ten. It was in danger. A change was needed.'
