Acapulco has a great field even without Federer, says Tournament Director

Roger Federer is the only big name who refused to play the Mexican Open in Acapulco so far. The Swiss player has been the Raul Zurutuza's goal since when he became the Tournament Director in 2003, but for whatever reason, they did not manage to reach an agreement. 'We always insisted but he has his plan, I do not know if he will play Dubai. It does not make us have sleepless nights either, we brought the world number two (Rafa Nadal), the ATP Finals Champion (Zverev), Isner who is a top ten, so we are happy.'

Novak Djokovic will not play. 'We understood he will play Dubai', Zurutuza said. Juan Martin del Potro instead continues his rehabilitation. 'It's a complicated process. Let's see what happens, we do not want to get in a rush, health comes first so that he comes back to the courts the way he wants.'

Explaining his absence in Acapulco, Federer said: 'Thing is, it's during the same time as Dubai, which I have an apartment in Dubai, and I have always played there. I haven't made plans yet for next Feb, but rather doubt I will go to play Acapulco, to be quite honest. Depend on the schedule of family, whether we stay in Dubai or stay in Switzerland. I have heard great things. Players like the tournament, they said it's well-run and good crowds, which would always be very attractive to find out how that atmosphere would play.'
