Alex de Minaur, Jack Sock and Lleyton Hewitt join New York Open field
The second edition of the New York Open will take place at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, Long Island, between February 11-17 on the unique black hard court. The organizers have already signed a great bunch of players, led by this year's finalists Kevin Anderson and Sam Querrey as well as another top-10 star John Isner and the Bryan brothers. In addition, Columbia University player Jack Lin secured the wild card after winning the New York Open Collegiate Wildcard Tournament, getting a chance to make his ATP debut on Tuesday night. New York Open officials have been working hard and they added four more players to the field, two of them who will compete in both singles and doubles.
The 22-year-old Long Island native Noah Rubin has grabbed a wild card to play in New York for the second time, losing to Kei Nishikori in straight sets this February. The American scored seven ATP wins so far and four of those came in 2018, reaching the third round in Washington and earning two more wins in Geneva and Atlanta. In addition, Noah claimed 23 Challenger wins to conquer Noumea and Tallahassee and he was on a career-high ranking in October. Rubin will try to reach the top-100 for the first time in 2019 and he is hoping for a deep run in front of the home crowd in two months time.
Jack Sock will make his first New York Open appearance, entering both the singles and doubles draw and seeking a good result that would improve his ranking position and helped him to regain the momentum he lost in 2018. After an amazing finish of 2017, Sock started the season from the top-10 but he managed to score just nine wins in 30 matches, dropping out from the top-100 in the year-end ranking for the first time in five years. On the other hand, he had a stellar year in doubles, winning three big titles with Mike Bryan to finish second in the rankings and he should be one of the players to beat in New York, no matter with whom he plays.
2018 ATP Newcomer of the Year, Alex de Minaur, is another player who will make a debut in New York and he is ready for a rather busy week, entering the doubles draw with a former world number 1 and Davis Cup captain Lleyton Hewitt. De Minaur had an amazing run in 2018, moving from outside the top-200 to come on a verge of entering the top-30 after playing in two ATP finals. Alex and Lleyton have already had a chance to play together, reaching the quarter-final in Estoril and spending many hours on the practice court, with Hewitt mentoring the progress of the Sydney native.
