Andy Roddick and Jim Courier to play in New York in February
The second edition of the New York Open at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, Long Island, will take place between February 9-17 next year and the crowd will get a chance to see some of the world's finest players on the unique black court. This year's finalists Kevin Anderson and Sam Querrey will fight for the title again, together with John Isner, Alex de Minaur, Noah Rubin and Jack Sock who are also confirmed. In addition, Bryan brothers, Jack Sock, Alex de Minaur and Lleyton Hewitt will all enter the doubles draw of the only indoor ATP event in North America and the organizers will try to add more big names in the following weeks.
Besides current tennis stars, the Long Island crowd will be able to attend the New York Tennis Expo and then the Opening Night which will see the clash of former number 1 players Andy Roddick and Jim Courier! The New York Tennis Expo will kick off at 10:30 AM, offering a chance for the fans to see some of their favorite players on the practice court and also to follow the main draw ceremony. Later in the evening, a chef David Burke will cook together with Roddick and Courier who will later play that exhibition match. On Tuesday night, the crowd will get a chance to see Jack Lin of Columbia University who will make his ATP debut after winning the New York Open Collegiate Wildcard Tournament.
“The team has done a great job securing several of the world’s top-10 players in singles and doubles and attracting legends who will also play in the main doubles competition,” said Josh Ripple, Tournament Chairman and co-Tournament Director of the New York Open. “Quite frankly, there’s nothing like a major, world-class sporting event in New York, and we think the play on the on-court will surpass what was an exceptional competition in 2018. The New York area tennis community was very supportive when we moved the event here last year from Memphis, and we’re looking forward to presenting even greater value to fans and sponsors in 2019.”
“Coming back to New York is certainly not a place where I want to not play well,” Roddick said. “You want to kind of find form early in the year. You can train as hard as you want, you can work as hard as you want, you can’t put confidence in a bottle. Sometimes I’d play well in Australia and then I’d feel good in Memphis. It kind of does give you a little bit of rhythm to your year and especially a guy like me or Kevin, who might not like the clay as much as some of the other guys, those first three months through March are super important.”
