Greg Rusedski believes Roger Federer deserves to get special treatment
The former world no. 4 Greg Rusedski believes Roger Federer deserves to kind of get a special treatment from tournaments. Speaking to Metro during the Champions Tennis Senior Tour event in London on Thursday, Rusedski said: ‘You earn your right, he sells your tickets. I think it’s kind of here nor there. You earn your rights. I think we’re talking about possibly the greatest player of all time and everybody wants to see him. The longer Roger plays this game, the better it is. He’s made a lot of people a lot more into this sport. He’s done so many positives so Julien is allowed his opinion in what he says but the tour has always been like that and it won’t change. Federer deserves it – he’s earned his right.’
Julien Benneteau claimed that Federer plays at night at the Australian Open because of the connection with Tennis Australia and the Laver Cup. But Rusedski does not believe this is a major factor ‘I don’t think it gets him scheduling benefits for doing that. I don’t think it allows him other things. Roger’s created the Laver Cup which is basically the Ryder Cup in tennis… bringing it to big cities around the world that don’t have big tennis events. I think it’s absolutely brilliant. And they [Tennis Australia] have got a partnership directly with it. I don’t know how financially it works. But I’ve known Roger for so long that I can’t imagine that he’s done anything murky and if he has I’m sure he will rectify it. If something is not correct, Federer is an honourable person. If he thinks he needs to rectify that situation or Craig Tiley does, they will if it doesn’t look correct.’
