Ilie Nastase explains why Roger Federer is not the greatest player ever
In an interview to Hotnews.ro, the two-time Grand Slam winner Ilie Nastase explained why Roger Federer is not the GOAT despite having won most number of Grand Slams in the Open Era. 'It's not right to say that Federer is the greatest player of all time, it's not justified for past players like Rod Laver or Pete Sampras,' said Nastase. 'People look at today's players, in every sport. (Cristiano) Ronaldo will be the best for ten years, but I do not want to put him in the mix. Everyone is big champions and performed at the highest level.'
Rafael Nadal is second in the leaderboard of most number of Slams won with 16, followed by Novak Djokovic at 14. Sampras won 14 Slams, while Laver won 11 Slams, including two career Grand Slams, once in the Pre Open Era in 1962 and once in the Open Era, in 1969.
Meanwhile, Cluj Mayor Emil Boc said an exhibition match between the 23-time Grand Slam winner Serena Williams and the country's hero Simona Halep was unlikely to take place there. 'We spoke with Mr. Tiriac and we were open to helping as much as we could. We can give them the stadium, but we cannot give money for Serena and Simona. Tiriac has amazing connections in tennis and I hope to get support from him.'
