John McEnroe praised Roger Federer's comeback at the highest level in the 2017 season after having a six-month break in 2016. Next month Federer will seek his seventh Australian Open title overall, the third in a row.
Asked if there can be teenagers able to win a Grand Slam, McEnroe said: 'Honestly I do not believe at it. Becker and Nadal succeeded, Djokovic was 20 I believe. I do not think it's impossible, but the game became more physical and at this age barely have all the strengths for seven matches. But I would have never expected Federer's comeback. He is Roger, the greatest of all time. Nothing is impossible for him.'
About Federer and Rafael Nadal, McEnroe added: 'They are the two greatest players of all time, it was unbelievable. For the men's tennis, it was a big boost.'
Asked for how much time Nadal and Federer will compete, McEnroe said: 'Probably not for a too long time. Big comebacks require a lot of effort. I know from my personal experience when I had a break at 27 years and I did not come back like Roger. Comebacks are a mental and physical challenge.'
