Novak Djokovic congratulates Luka Modric on winning 2018 Ballon d'Or

Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic has congratulated Croatian football star Luka Modric on winning the 2018 Ballon d'Or award.

The Croatian midfielder claimed his maiden Ballon d'Or award at the age of 33.

The 33-year-old won the 2018 UEFA Champions League title with Real Madrid before he led Croatia to reach the World Cup final.

Modric fell just short of winning a Champions League title and World Cup title in the same year as Croatia lost to France in the final 4-2.

However, the Croatian was still voted ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

Ronaldo finished runner-up, while Messi finished fifth in the voting.

France's Antoine Griezmann was voted third and Kylian Mbappe finished fourth respectively.

"Congratulations to Luka Modric. Proud moment for our region to have the best football player in the world," Djokovic wrote on Facebook.

Winning the prestigious award was a dream come true for Modric.

"As a kid we all have dreams. My dream was to play for a big club and win important trophies," Modric said, per The New York Times. "The Ballon d’Or was more than just a dream for me and it is really an honour and a privilege to hold this trophy."

2018 brought many good memories to Djokovic as well, who won two Grand Slam titles and returned to No. 1 in the world this past season.
