David Ferrer: 'Younger players may become like me, but not like Nadal'

In an interview David Ferrer commented on how Spanish tennis will look like once Rafael Nadal steps away from it. Ferrer, who will retire from the professional game at next month's Madrid Open, said: "The situation is good. You have a lot of good players, but if we compare to Rafa Nadal... There are not. I think that you have players who can look like David Ferrer, but not Rafa Nadal. You will not have a Nadal, but you will have players who are close to the top ten. Some players will give happiness to the Spanish tennis."

How does he imagine his life once he ends his career? "Very different. I have been doing the same thing for years and I want to mentally rest from all that. Travelling much less and when I do it, in a different way. I want to be more at home, with my family and friends. But I like tennis without a doubt and I will always be connected to the sport. I want time for myself. Time to understand and do things that tennis did not allow me to do. I am not afraid Looking to the future, but I am afraid in getting involved in things I do not know. I have been away from home for 14 years and you cannot spend more time with Friends or family. You live things differently than the others. The sport teaches you some values, knowing the world and other cultures that working in another environment I would have not known, especially since a pretty young age. That's why I will always be grateful to tennis."

Is it difficult for a young player to break the top ten rankings? "It Is and even more in the last years where the prevention of injuries evolved a lot. That's why the younger players do not crack the rankings as they did before."

On what he plans to do after his retirement, Ferrer added: "I have been away from home for 14 years and you cannot spend more time with Friends or family. You live things differently than the others. The sport teaches you some values, knowing the world and other cultures that working in another environment I would have not known, especially since a pretty young age. That's why I will always be grateful to tennis."
