Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic are the favorites in Abu Dhabi - Cash
The 1987 Wimbledon champion Pat Cash believes that it will be difficult to see Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic losing to the likes of Karen Khachanov, Dominic Thiem, Kevin Anderson and Hyeon Chung. But in an interview to Khaleej Times, Cash admitted that Khachanov has the highest chances after Nadal and Djokovic. 'Thiem and Chung have incredible speed and perhaps Khachanov has little more power than them in general,' Cash said. 'It will be hard for them to win but Khachanov has had some very good form recently and I would expect him to break through this year. Perhaps it will be Melbourne, so the MWTC is an important event for him.'
Cash is also looking forward to see Serena and Venus Williams facing each other on Thursday 27 December. They last competed in an official match in the 2017 Australian Open final. 'Well, it's always exciting to see some of the all-time greats play,' Cash admitted. 'And they are still in amazing form. This includes the Williams sisters of course. This year the tournament has a particularly interesting blend of legends and young guns.'
Cash finally praised Rafael Nadal in an interview to CNN: 'He's unbelievably fast, and he can keep going forever, which helps on the clay. He keeps getting the ball back, his speed and athleticism is just phenomenal. His footwork on the clay is amazing, I don't think I've ever seen anybody move that quick on the clay. Mentally, he's just ferocious. Clay is one of the toughest surfaces to be successful at, because you have to be focused all the time, the momentum can change very quickly. On grass or other courts, you can hold your serve, or hit a couple of big serves and stay in it, but not on the clay, you have to be persistent all the time.'
