Roger Federer is not mentally fresh, says Novak Djokovic's fitness trainer

Novak Djokovic's fitness trainer Gebhard Gritsch believes Roger Federer is dealing with a mental issue. The Swiss player turned 37 in August, and he has been not been getting the greatest results in recent times. Speaking about the 2019 season in an interview to Kurier, Gritsch said: 'You have to wait for (Rafael) Nadal, he always comes back strong. With Roger Federer I had the feeling that he is not mentally fresh and then there is a lack of rhythm and speed, which are not connected to the body.'

About Dominic Thiem, Gritsch added: 'He is again the French Open favourite with Nadal. It only takes time before he puts everything together in his game.'

Explaining the Serbian's drop of level in Paris and London, Gritsch said: 'Novak had an extremely big amount of matches. It was in part his fault. It was more of a mental issue, he was not focused enough.'

On Marian Vajda, Gritsch added: 'Marian Vajda is a great coach and the easy going guy, I’m more like the calmer brain of the team. We just found a good combination to combine all the components that make up a successful professional.'

Meanwhile, John McEnroe said there are too many team competitions in tennis: 'One of the most important things about the sport is they need to be on the same page, and it needs to be more partnerships. For example this latest Davis Cup proposal along with the ATP team championship proposal. To me, they should be in one event. That should be something that should be a priority for our sport. God forbid these powers that be work together.'
