Alex Corretja concerned about Spanish Tennis future
With just Rafael Nadal stamping authority over tennis for Spain in recent times, former World No.2 and Roland Garros Finalist Alex Corretja feels Spanish Tennis might see a downfall post Nadal.
“There will continue to be players but it will be difficult for us to understand the post-Rafa era,” Corretja said. “But it has happened to other countries such as Germany, with Steffi (Graff) and (Boris) Becker."
He further added, “To the United States, with (Pete) Sampras and (Andre) Agassi, or to Sweden.”
“The time after Nadal will not be easy because any comparison with the players that will come or those that have been is literally impossible.”
Having worked as the Spanish Davis Cup Team coach earlier, Corretja further added that he was not interested in coaching professionals main stream. He has worked with Andy Murray in the past and split with the Brit in 2011.
“It's complicated to be with a player all the time,” he added. “I received offers from top-10, from winning Grand Slam tennis players. But when you have a family and four children, the priorities are different. I love tennis but it does not compensate me.”
Prior to the first major of the year, Corretja also spoke about Murray, saying, "Andy is someone who will fight for everything. He is someone who was always searching for something huge. Ever since I have known him he always wanted to be number one and win Slams."
