Andy Murray did not end too far away from Federer, Nadal, Djokovic - Toni
In a column for El Pais Rafael Nadal's uncle paid a great tribute to Andy Murray, who may have retired from professional tennis. The Spaniard and the Brit faced each other 23 times on Tour, with Nadal leading head to head meetings 11-5. 'Seeing the image and the message that Andy Murray gave us in a press conference explaining his inability to keep sustaining hip pain', wrote Toni. 'A retirement due to injury is, without a doubt, a setback that no fans want to see or any other person. It's the worst thing about the game. The British's achievements list, with his three Grand Slam titles, Masters Cup, 14 Masters 1000s, his two Olympic medals ann Davis Cup, do not describe enough the greatness of his tennis and the weight that he had in what probably is the best era of the game. He was one of the most complete players for shots and tactics.'
Toni praised Murray's game: 'Andy had a very good on-court position, great quickness, excellent ball dominance, a very high level first serve and one of the best backhands of the Tour with Novak Djokovic. His achievements are not equalled to the Serb, Roger and Rafael either, but his tennis, under my point of view, did not get too far away from the three. If I had to mention a weakness, it might be his mental strength that sometimes dropped down a little in the toughest moments of the match. You have to say that, anyway, in 2016, when he reached his biggest level and delivered amazing tennis, he overcame any kind of weakness.'
