Australian Open women's preview: Is it time for Serena to get the record?

There are a lot of contenders to win the women's singles title at the 2019 Australian Open, beginning with Simona Halep, who is the top-seed. However, the world no. 1 has a tough draw and will have a possible fourth round against Serena Williams.

Both Halep and Williams are aiming for a place in the final, and both are among the favorites for the final victory, but it will not be an easy journey. Serena wants the record of 24 Majors that still belongs to Margaret Smith.

Karolina Pliskova, Venus Williams and Garbine Muguruza are the other big names in their section of the draw. The second quarter-final could see Naomi Osaka take on Elina Svitolina, who has a lot to prove in the Majors.

In the bottom half, the first quarter is very crowded with Caroline Wozniacki (defending champions), Petra Kvitova, Aryna Sabalenka, Ashleigh Barty, Maria Sharapova and Jelena Ostapenko.

In the last part, Angelique Kerber has a relatively easier draw, even if in her fourth round, she could face Sloane Stephens. The German is another contender to the final victory; easy draw, excellent fitness level (as seen at the Hopman Cup) and experience. A winning mix that can make her the true protagonist of the Australian fortnight.
