Changing of the guard in tennis will happen this year, says John McEnroe

How can Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal compete at their best level on a consistent basis? The seven-time Grand Slam winner John McEnroe tried to explain it in an interview to ABC. 'You are speaking of extremely talented players. They are three of the best five players of all time', said McEnroe. 'Expecting that others players come and play at the same level is not realistic. But honestly I believe that this year you will have a changing of the guard. I do not know if Alexander Zverev, who has the best team and showed that he can deal with pressure; although it doesn't always work. Or the guys coming up like Karen Khachanov and Stefanos Tsitsipas. We will see some of them doing something big. More than other veterans like Anderson and Cilic. It's time that younger guys realize that they are better, and with a bit of luck...'

'The tennis is much more physical and the ball is faster and faster. It's tougher than a 20-year-old can win a Grand Slam because you have to compete at the best level during seven matches in a row at the best of five sets. You need time so that your body and attitude develope. It seems that some names can do it. They have the time and the effort. They need to keep adding qualities to their game.'
