David Ferrer's legacy undershadowed by Rafael Nadal - Martinez

In an interview to El Mundo, the 1994 Wimbledon champion Conchita Martinez praised David Ferrer who will retire from professional tennis at the Madrid Open in May. Martinez said: 'David is an example for many of us. His work ethic, the way he fought in every match and every practice, is something that younger players, male and female players need to look at and admire. He is a lovely player, a great person. He had an impressive career, which was seen less because he was under Rafa's shadow. What David achieved is impressive, he is a very good player.'

On the future of Spanish tennis, Ferrer added: 'You will have to look at the players coming up. It will be something difficult to replace because what Rafa did will basically be impossible. We will support male and female players in order to make them achieve results.'

Martinez was the Davis Cup captain between 2015 and 2016 and Fed Cup between 2013 and 2017 and she did not deny that she may have this role again in the future. 'It would be something you will have to study. I am not going to hide: the Federation never acted well, there is no relationship with the Federation. For me, they were very bad. If another opportunity comes I will analyze it. Now I am in a very good moment of my career.'

Nadal will start his 2019 Australian Open campaign against James Duckworth.
