Fabio Fognini on Andy Murray: It's incredible what you've done for tennis
Italian tennis star Fabio Fognini has wished former world No. 1 Andy Murray all the best in his retirement days.
The three-time Grand Slam champion announced during an emotional pre-Australian Open press conference that he is planning to retire at Wimbledon.
The 31-year-old has tried everything possible to prolong his career but there is no point in continuing as his right hip is severely damaged.
Unfortunately, Murray's retirement from the game may even come sooner as there is no guarantee that his hip will hold until July.
Murray and 31-year-old Fognini have clashed against each other seven times so far in their respective careers.
The Scot leads the head-to-head record 4-3.
"Hey Andy, we met a long time ago, maybe when we were teenagers! I always enjoyed competing against you and I have great memories from our matches. What you have done for this sport is incredible and will live on forever! I wish you all the best," Fognini wrote on Twitter.
Murray has been drawn to meet recent Qatar ExxonMobil Open champion Roberto Bautista Agut in the Australian Open first round.
The Scot admitted during his pre-Australian Open press conference that the opening Grand Slam of the season may be the last tournament of his career.
Murray is a five-time Australian Open runner-up.
